Stadium lights worth an estimated $400,000 will be soon powered up at Penticton Youth Park.

The city is hosting an event on Oct. 18, to unveil its new lights at the Riverside Drive facility.

Free to attend, the light-up event will feature a DJ, food trucks, skateboarding, BMX biking and basketball showcase.

"Wesa国际传媒檙e excited to flip the switch on this project, illuminating the skate park and basketball courts for the first time and enhancing this incredible amenity even further so residents and visitors can use it during any season,sa国际传媒� said Draydan Power, the city's manager of energy and environment.

Construction on the project began earlier in September, following a successful notice of motion from city councillors Amelia Boultbee, Isaac Gilbert and Ryan Graham.

Citing public safety, the trio in May 2023 called for installation of lights using money from Penticton's $7.2 million share of the B.C. government's Growing Communities Fund.

Along with new lights, the park will now also feature two permanent shade structures added to the seating areas and a new washroom facility by the parking lot.

The event begins at 5 p.m., with a three-on-three basketball showcase hosted by Lake City Basketball. An open skate and BMX ride and official light-up are also scheduled. It set to conclude at 7 p.m.

Representatives from local bike and snowboard shops will be on-site and taking part in the open skate event, according to the city.

Construction will continue in the coming weeks, as crews complete upgrades to the path from Riverside Drive to the skate park.

City officials said Thursday that a water bottle fill station, bike and skateboard repair stations, and picnic tables are among the amenities set to be added to the park in the future.

The Penticton Youth Park, located at 135 Riverside Dr., was built in 2007 and serves as B.C.'s third-largest skate park.
