On August 25, for the last time, Penticton will host the Ironman triathlon.

The countdown to the final running of the event has begun, with thousands of athletes and supporters set to arrive over the next couple of weeks.

Ironman announced in July that the August event would be the final run of the event, 41 years after the first triathlon was held in Penticton. 

At the time, the competition was called the Peach City Triathlon before it became Ironman, and that original title was revived and continues to grow in popularity in Penticton. 

Ahead of Ironman's return, the City of Penticton is giving residents advance notice of road closures on Aug. 24 and 25. 

On Aug. 24, downtown will see closures around Main Street for the Ironkids fun run. 

On Aug. 25, the city is recommending travellers use Channel Parkway or Government Street wherever possible and avoid crossing Main Street. 

If necessary to cross Main Street, the city says the best time to do so is between 10 and 11:30 a.m.

Ironman Canada is seeking volunteers for many positions taking place throughout the week, including the two race events on the weekend. To sign up, visit ironman.com/im-canada.

The city is also encouraging residents to head down to the Farmers' Market on Aug. 17 or 24 to pick up fan kits including street chalk and blank signs to show community support for the athletes.

Locals are also invited to visit the Ironman Village or enjoy live entertainment at the Ironman Garden at Gyro Park.
