August 11, 1925 - September 3, 2024

In loving memory ~

Alfred R. Wood, known as Alf, died peacefully at the Hospice House in Kelowna on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, with his loving daughters by his side. He lived a "wonderful" 99 years and was looking forward to being reunited with Vera, his wife of 72 years.

Born in New Westminster on August 11, 1925, the youngest son of Ernie and Margaret Wood, Alf was very adventurous and loved to go fishing; he was diligent and worked hard at a variety of jobs from a young age. At the age of 19, Alf served for 2 years in the Armed Forces overseas and was attached to the Seaforth Highlanders while in Italy.

Upon his return home he met his future bride, the love of his life, at a dance in Fort Langley; they married in 1948 and began a life together in New Westminster raising their 2 daughters. In later years, Alf was lovingly known as 'Papa' to his two granddaughters, who, in turn, blessed him with 5 great-grandchildren- He loved them all very much and was delighted to hear about their activities and accomplishments.

Alf worked at a lumber mill in New West for 42 years and retired as the maintenance superintendent of Doman's in 1984. Alf worked hard to provide for his family, as well, he enjoyed many lifelong friendships. House parties were frequent -playing cards or dancing, always filled with fun and laughter. He had a good sense of humor and liked to tell stories, some of which were probably true!

Alf loved sports and had an exceptional seven-year career playing Senior A lacrosse for the New Westminster Salmonbellies. He was awarded the Rookie of the Year award in 1947 and was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in the Veteran category in 1999. After 51 years of living on the coast, Alf & Vera moved to Westbank for their remaining years where they met new friends while continuing friendships of old. They loved to travel and cruise, creating many more memories. Alf enjoyed the camaraderie of his neighbours and appreciated their help when he was no longer able to do things for himself.

Alf will be forever remembered by his daughters, Diane & Jan, granddaughters Angela (Dylan), their children Hugo, Willa & Lewis Alfred, & Teresa (Elliot) and their children, Wesley & Joshua. He will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews & friends.

The family would like to thank and express their appreciation to the staff at Hospice House for the care and respect that was given to him in the final days of his life.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a tribute gift to the Kelowna General Hospital Foundation in memory of Alf and directed to the Hospice House & Palliative Care.
