B.C.'s craft beer community has spoken.

A trio of Penticton breweries received high praise at the Growler's 2024 Craft Beer and Cider Awards, as voted on by beer lovers across the province.

Abandoned Rail Brewing's Marzen Bavarian Lager was named the best beer in B.C., while Cannery Brewing took home second-place honours in the best overall brewery category.

The Peach Cream Ale from Tin Whistle Brewing, meanwhile, was voted as the third-best fruit beer in the province.

Abandoned Rail, like Cannery, was on the receiving end of more than one award, with the former placing second in the "Unsung Hero of Craft Beer" award (for locations outside Metro Vancouver and Victoria) and third in the food category.

Cannery Brewing's Lakeboat Lager was named the third-best best light beer, while its Naramata Brown Ale took home third-place honours in the dark ale category. Its Sunblink Berry Sour was also recognized, with the beer being named the third-best sour ale.

The awards, also known as the "Growlies," represent a yearly opportunity for the beer community to vote on what brews they like best province-wide.

A "diverse panel of beer and cider experts" nominated breweries across B.C. earlier this summer, before leaving it out for a vote to the general public, according to award officials.

Winners were announced on Sept. 3.

Penticton's brewery scene as a whole was also recognized, with the "Do Good" brew being named B.C.'s third-best best beer collaboration. The beverage was released in October 2023 for Penticton Beer Week.

Sales from the beer, totalling $3,690.47, went toward the local SPCA branch.

The three aforementioned breweries, along with Barley Mill Brew Pub, Highway 97 Brewing, Neighbourhood Brewing, Slackwater Brewing and Yellow Dog Brewing, all participated in the initiative.
